| Requirements - A tin can about 10cms in diameter and 13cms high. - About 30cms of nichrome wire. - A wooden base with two nails- A 9V battery. - Two short lengths of ceramic pipes. - Insulating wires.
Procedure - With the help of an adult, cut out about a third of the side of the tin can.
- Make two small holes in the sides of the tin and insert the ceramic tubes. - Wind the nichrome resistance wire round a knitting needle to make a coil. - Withdraw the needle and put the ends of the wire through the holes of the ceramic pipes. - Connect these ends with the help of insulating wires of two nails fixed to the wooden board. - Finally nail the tin can to the base. - Connect the terminals to the battery and see how the nichrome rod glows red. This is your heating coil. The heat from the element will be reflected from the inside of the tin. |
